Candy Buy Back Program Returns!!!
Children of our office: hold on to your Halloween candy after trick or treating this year! In a effort to encourage good dental health, our office will be offering a “Candy Buy Back Program.” It is very simple – bring your Halloween candy into the clinic during office hours and exchange it for a toy of your choice.

Amalgam Fillings and Mercury
There are a few types of fillings used to fix cavities. A common type of filling used is amalgam or “silver” as it is very strong and the amount of exposure to mercury is very minimal.
Another type of reliable filling is gold, but is more time consuming and more expensive. A cast of your tooth has to be taken and sent to a laboratory to have a custom filling made to be placed in the tooth.
And then there is the composite filling, which is popular as it is “tooth-colored.”
It is important to have regular dental exams and dental x-rays as they can detect early decay. If you have any cavities it is important to have them filled. If a cavity gets large enough it can cause pain and go into the nerve resulting in possible infection that would need root canal therapy or extraction. Fillings can be done to help preserve a tooth after decay is removed.
Because many people are concerned with the mercury content in “silver” fillings, you can learn more in the Journal of Canadian Dental Association and from Health Canada from the links below.

The Canadian Dental Association encourages good oral health by recommending that all children find a “dental home” by age one. The goal is to minimize a child’s risk of developing dental decay by encouraging good habits at an early age, such as daily brushing and healthy food choices. Children can also benefit from proven preventative techniques such as topical fluoride applications, sealants, and community water fluoridation.
A healthy mouth is more than just a great smile. There are proven connections between oral health and systemic (whole body) health so caring for one’s teeth also results in better overall physical health.
The Canadian Institute for Health reports that 1/3 of all day surgeries performed on kids ages 1-5 are due to early childhood decay. Bringing your children in by age 1 gets them started on the road to optimal dental health!
