What is Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy?
Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy is similar to physical therapy for the muscles of your face and mouth. The goal of myofunctional therapy is to restore normal function of the mouth and tongue muscles. Normal function includes nasal breathing, lip seal, and high tongue posture while at rest. When these goals are not being met, we develop abnormal muscle patterns over time which leads to Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders (OMDs).
OMDs include: mouth breathing, low tongue posture at rest, open mouth resting posture, thrusting of tongue while swallowing or speaking.
OMDs are known to be linked to many problems that can affect your quality of life. These include:
Breathing Issues
Sleep Apnea
Snoring
Orthodontic Relapse
Narrowing of the palate
