Sedation Dentistry in Saskatoon (Nitrous Oxide)

Call Willowgreen Dental at (306) 955-2400 today for sedation dentistry! We will endeavor to give you the most painless and anxiety free dental experience possible.

Many people avoid visiting the dentist due to fear and anxiety. Fortunately, with advances in sedation dentistry, there is no need to let those fears hold you back from receiving necessary dental care. At Willowgreen Dental, we are proud to offer nitrous oxide (laughing gas) as a safe and effective sedation method for our Saskatoon patients.

Sedation Dentistry

What Is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry involves using medication to help patients relax during dental procedures. It can be used for patients who experience mild to severe anxiety, have a strong gag reflex or require extensive dental work that would otherwise be uncomfortable or painful.

At Willowgreen Dental, we offer nitrous oxide as a form of conscious sedation. This means the patient remains awake and responsive throughout the procedure but will feel relaxed and less anxious. The gas is colorless and odorless, and when inhaled, it induces feelings of relaxation. Despite the nickname “laughing gas,” nitrous oxide itself doesn’t usually make people laugh out loud, but it can create a sense of euphoria or light-headedness.

Here’s how it works:

  • A small mask is placed over your nose, and you breathe normally.
  • Our dentist controls the amount of nitrous oxide you receive to ensure your comfort and safety.
  • Within a few minutes, you may feel a floating sensation and perhaps some tingling in the hands and feet.
  • You remain awake and can still respond to requests or directions from our dentist.
  • Once the procedure is over, the nitrous oxide is turned off, and you’ll typically recover in just a few minutes.
  • One advantage of nitrous oxide is that, in most cases, you can drive home after the appointment because the effects wear off quickly.

When Is Sedation Dentistry Used?

We usually use sedation dentistry in the following situations:

Dental Anxiety or Phobia

Some people have severe anxiety or fear about going to the dentist. Sedation can help these patients relax and feel more comfortable during their dental procedures.

Low Pain Threshold

People who have a low pain threshold may not be able to endure certain dental procedures without sedation.

Sensitive Gag Reflex

Sedation can make dental procedures more comfortable for patients with a sensitive gag reflex.

Complex Dental Issues

If a patient needs a large amount of dental work or a particularly long procedure, sedation can help them remain comfortable.

Special Needs Patients

Sedation can also benefit patients with special needs who may struggle to cooperate or sit still during a dental procedure.

Some children who are very fearful or who do not understand how to cooperate for needed dental treatment can benefit from sedation.

Benefits of Nitrous Oxide Sedation

Here are some benefits of nitrous oxide sedation:

  • Ease of administration
  • Adjustable levels
  • Minimal side effects
  • Conscious sedation
  • Patients recover quickly and can usually drive themselves home after the procedure
  • Useful for mild to moderate anxiety

Remember, while nitrous oxide is safe for most patients, it’s not suitable for everyone. Patients who are pregnant, have chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or have some other specific conditions may not be able to use nitrous oxide. We will discuss your medical history and any concerns before sedation.
